West Springs is a residential neighborhood in the South West quadrant of Calgary, Alberta. It is located at the western edge of the city, and is bordered to the west by the acreages and estate homes of Springbank. To the east it is bounded by 69 Street West, to the south by Bow Trail and to the north by Old Banff Coach Road and the community of Cougar Ridge and Canada Olympic Park.
The land, previously part of the East Springbank area of the Municipal District of Rocky View, was annexed to the City of Calgary in 1995 and West Springs was established in 2001. It is represented in the Calgary City Council as Ward 6 .The western extension of the neighbourhood, west of 85th Street, reaching into the aspen parkland is called Wentworth.
The North East development is known as West Springs Farm, as seen in the photo above.
This community belongs to the West Springs Cougar Ridge Community Association which “serves an ever-increasing population, representing one of the fastest growing communities in Canada with a rich mix of cultural diversity, abundant natural parks and green space, recreation facilities, and shopping and services of all kinds at our Community Core.”
An area this large in scope offers a number of beautiful parks and ravines for community and family use. It is in close proximity to Canada Olympic Park. A short bike ride or drive to the top of COP and you’ve got a veritable winter wonderland of entertainment. In the summer, the many downhill bike paths are available to explore at all levels of expertise.
COP is home to WinSport. A not-for-profit organization, WinSport owns and operates Canada Olympic Park in Calgary, the Bill Warren Training Centre at the Canmore Nordic Centre in Canmore Alberta, and the Beckie Scott High Performance Training Centre on Haig Glacier Alberta. WinSport also funds two-thirds of the operating budget for the Olympic Oval at the University of Calgary. Money spent at WinSport facilities supports not only Canadian high-performance athletes, but introduces thousands of Calgarians to winter sports each year. The Markin MacPhail Center is also home to the Calgary Board of Education’s National Sports School. You can learn more about this special program at www.nationalsportschool.ca.
West Springs is home to the West Springs Elementary School
and the St. Joan of Arc Catholic School.
It is imperative to check with the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School Board websites for current school locations and/or busing programs. Many of the local schools in the area are capped and students are being bussed to neighboring communities so it’s important to check in advance.
Two other private schools are in neighboring Cougar Ridge, the Calgary French & International School and the Calgary Waldorf School. There are a number of other private schools a short drive away, please check their websites for location, programs and space availability: Rundle College Junior and Senior High, Calgary Academy, and Webber Academy. Two other private schools are in neighboring Cougar Ridge, the Calgary French & International School and the Calgary Waldorf School.
Residents can enjoy the newest shopping center just minutes away, Aspen Landing. You’ll find Aspen Hills and Estates have several grocery stores to choose from all within a 5-10 minute drive: Coop, No-Frill’s, Safeway, Sobey’s, Superstore, Sunterra Market and my personal favorite Blush Lane Organic Market.
The facilities and athletic programs for young and old alike at the nearby Westside Rec Center are outstanding. Take your kids to enjoy the wave pool and slide or swim laps or take lessons. Upstairs is a massive running track and programs include a state of the art Spin Class with virtual rides.
Here are a number of current listings available in this community. Please contact me by phone or text if you would like to preview any of these beautiful homes.
