Just head west along Old Banff Coach Road, past Coach Hill and you’ll see the Patterson|Prominence Community just on your right. Before annexation, most of this and surrounding areas consisted of acreages and farmland. It was named after the Patterson family, who owned much of the land. Prior to that, it was known as Broadcast Hill, for the 250 m (820 ft) CFCN re-transmission tower located here.
During the 1988 Olympic Winter Games hosted by Calgary, the Broadcast Hill Media Village was located in Patterson Heights. The apartments have since been converted into condominiums and many area available as rental units.
The Hart House is a landmark residence located in Patterson Heights as well. Once owned by Stu Hart, it was home to his family, reknown for their accomplishments in the professional wrestling arena. While no longer owned by the Harts, this mansion continues to be referred to as the “Hart House”. In December 2012, it was designated as a municipal Heritage Site by the City of Calgary as part of a development deal which also allowed the owner to build nine houses with secondary suites on the Hart House’s undeveloped grounds.
There are a number of other private schools a short drive away, please check their websites for location, programs and space availability: Calgary International French School, Calgary Waldorf, Rundle College Junior and Senior High, Calgary Academy, and Webber Academy. The Markin MacPhail Center is also home to the Calgary Board of Education’s National Sports School. You can learn more about this special program here. Check the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School Board websites for current school locations and/or busing programs. Many of the local schools in the area are capped and students are being bussed to neighboring communities so it’s important to check in advance. The residents of Patterson|Prominence also enjoy its close proximity to Canada Olympic Park. A short bike ride or walk to the top of COP and you’ve got a veritable winter wonderland of entertainment.
In the summer, the many downhill bike paths are available to explore at all levels of expertise.
The facilities and athletic programs for young and old alike at the nearby Westside Rec Center are outstanding. Take your kids to enjoy the wave pool and slide or swim laps or take lessons. Upstairs is a massive running track and programs include a state of the art Spin Class with virtual rides.
A short drive and you can enjoy their newest shopping center, Aspen Landing. You’ll also find Prominence|Patterson residents have several grocery stores to choose from all within a 5-10 minute drive: Coop, No-Frill’s, Safeway, Sobey’s, Superstore, Sunterra Market and my personal favorite Blush Lane Organic Market.
