I am always excited when I hear of new schools being built in our area on the west side of Calgary. Our communities have outgrown the currently available schools, this has been an ongoing problem for years.
One such school to be constructed is a Catholic school set to be built in Aspen Estates, at 20 Aspen Hills Drive SW. Opening is planned for K-6 in the fall of 2016.
I was so pleased to hear, just recently, that two public schools are slated to be built on “the hill”. Many of my clients have wanted to purchase homes up in our area but have been reluctant to do so, because most of the schools in our local communities are “capped”. Most families, especially those with young children, still like the idea of being able to walk their children to a local school. Sending your children by bus is convenient for some, but undesirable for others due to the long wait and even longer ride.
I was pleased to read in the Calgary Herald recently that the government has scrapped plans to build “starter schools” in favour of larger “full scale” buildings. This is certainly exciting news and I wanted to know where these would built since I live in the Aspen area.
According to the Calgary Board of Education’s own website, the Aspen Hills school is to be built on “Strathcona Dr. SW, just northeast of Strathlea Gate SW on the approved CBE school site zoned for educational purposes”. Currently this field has a playground and is often used for community soccer games. This school will have Regular Programming. Thankfully, traffic calming measures are already in place because this is really going to increase traffic on Strathcona Drive.
The new West Springs Middle School will be built on the corner of Wentworth Avenue and Wentworth Rise SW, in the big field across from the Catholic School, not far behind the Co-op grocery store on 85th. Students from both West Springs and Cougar Ridge will be able to attend this new school. This school will also offer Regular Programming.
These schools are expected to be finished in the 2016/2017 year. The communities of Saddleridge and Cranston are also slated to have new schools built.
This is great news for the Real Estate market, parents with very young children now have the option to buy homes and move into these areas knowing that there will be schools in the future for their children.
