One of my favourite spaces in a home to decorate and stage are the bathrooms. Why? Because they can so easily become beautiful areas that emulate the tranquility and calmness of a spa retreat. Also, they require so very few additional items that they are one of the most affordable to stage with the most impact.
Even a tiny powder room can be enhanced with a fresh set of towels, a painting and some fragrant soap pumps.. and perhaps a small bouquet of flowers. Look at what one homeowner has done with some simple wallpaper and two wall sconces. Everything is kept very simple and white in this design, with the addition of one white soap pump and one white towel.
If you’re a fan of over the top, this chandelier light fixture is a big statement. The wallpaper is still neutral but has a design that ties in with the style of lighting. Again, all colors are neutral, white with one grey fringed towel. I’d love to have this powder room in my home!
If you don’t care for wallpaper, a strong paint color can make a statement. This homeowner has tied the window coverings in with a simple panel of fabric with a deep slate colored trim. But what makes this room exciting, is the bit of yellow in the painting. Orchids are a simple flower that will last for a long time with minimal care.
But paint, light fixtures and wall paper are larger changes that you might not be willing to invest in.
So let’s look at simpler ways to stage any bathroom. First, clear out all of your every day toiletries and put them in drawers or baskets under the sink. The counters should have very few objects, flowers, a jar and perhaps a tray with a few of your prettier bottles of perfume or after shave. Did you see they’ve hung a mirror in place of the builder’s mirror, this is another inexpensive change. HomeSense has beautiful mirrors that would work in many homes.
Trays are a fantastic way to create a simple, pretty collection. This works beautifully because the clean white color is accented with yellow for a fresh look. Bottled pumps of soap, hand lotion and trays like this can be found really affordably at HomeSense.
If your bathroom cabinets are a darker wood, try using baskets like these ones for a more rustic display. Note that the color scheme is still kept neutral and the towels are mostly white. I think this sort of decor would be striking in a man’s apartment or home.
Glass jars are so beautiful next to a tub or if you have a larger vanity. Just fill them with soaps and bath bombs. Did you notice that every bar of soap is identical? It creates unity and visual calmness and of course, groupings of three or five are always ideal.
Some homeowners are fortunate to have open shelving in their bathrooms. See how the white towels are all folded identically and stacked with a few accent colors? This is a very calming and orderly display. White fluffy towels can be purchased very inexpensively at HomeSense or Ikea to create this same look.
I will admit I’m not the biggest fan of bathroom mats, if I were listing my home I’d probably just fold them away. But look how pretty this bathroom looks with a bright, new white mat and a colored one folded over the tub as an accent.
If you have a shower curtain that is a statement like this one, you need very little to complete the look of your space, keep everything else neutral. If your shower curtain is old, get rid of it and pick up an inexpensive one for a fast update.
This bathroom has a beautiful rug that works.. but I think you could put anything in a bathroom this beautiful and it would look stunning! But what I’d like you to see is the stack of three folded towels on the toilet, another great way to make a bathroom look decorated.
And.. I think if I had a bathroom like this one.. I wouldn’t be selling my home!
I hope this has helped you work out some simple design ideas for staging your own bathrooms at home. Think white with perhaps one accent color, new white fluffy towels, a small flower arrangement and a new soap pump.. and maybe a basket or tray to put rolled towels in.
If you’d like my advice in setting up your home, just give me a call. I love decorating homes, even if you’re not quite ready to sell.. it’s wonderful to live in a beautiful home!
